HAPPY PRIDE MONTH! Summer Groups and Activities with Groundswell

We're gearing up for warm weather with a few outdoor arts workshops, therapeutic groups, and events designed to support personal growth, mental health, and connection to your community.

First, we wanted to appreciate our friends at Thrive Empowerment Center for having us table at their Take Back the Night event, which raised awareness for sexual abuse survivors.

Summer Workshops to Break Free from the Stagnancy

Several upcoming workshops will focus on judgment-free creativity and emotional well-being. These opportunities provide hands-on learning in supportive environments that encourage experimenting.

Soul-Searching: a celebratory day for those in recovery & their families

  • When: June 6, 10:00am-noon

  • Where: The Ridge Ohio

  • What: We'll lead all attendees in making their own felt pendants or banners with uplifting images or quotes! Supplies & snacks will be provided by The Ridge.

  • Who should attend: Alumni of the addiction treatment programs (and their supporters!)

Lo-fi Photography: making sense of ancestors and the self

  • When: June 11, 4-6:00pm

  • Where: Contemporary Arts Center

  • What: We'll discuss lineage, partner up and photograph each other, then utilize found photos to create magnets. Supplies & snacks will be provided by the CAC, and artists will be on hand to assist. Pleas note: This workshop may provide insight into a greater desire for regular therapy.

  • Recommended to bring: Any old pictures you have, as long as you don't mind altering them.

Standup Therapy: because these comics need validation, too

  • When: June 11, 8-10:00pm

  • Where: Commonwealth Comedy Club

  • What: Local comedians perform in front of three licensed therapists and answer their questions. Please note that this is a comedy show, and should not be confused for actual therapy.

  • Who should attend: Anyone. (Most of these events, if you haven't noticed, are fully inclusive.)

Young Adult Lab PRIDE Edition: tie-dyeing bandanas

  • When: June 25, 4-6:00pm

  • Where: Contemporary Arts Center

  • What: Celebrate Pride with a workshop geared toward making tie-dyed bandanas, shirts, etc. Plus we'll have pronoun button-making available, as well as rhinestoning.

Art in the Future: Xavier's summer art and design camp for ages 11-14

  • When: July 6-10, all day

  • Where: Xavier University

  • What: Art in the Future explores how traditional materials and methods merge with emerging digital tools to imagine new art forms. The week ends with a gallery showcasing campers' work!

  • Who should attend: Kids age 11-14 (older teens able to apply for Counselor-in-Training, too.)

Northside Photo Walks Takes the CAC

  • When: August 2, 3-5:00pm

  • Where: Contemporary Arts Center

  • What: The Northside Photo Walks group takes weekly strolls around Northside and twice a month they venture into other neighborhoods as well. This is a great way to meet new friends!

  • What to bring: any kind of camera - your phone, a point & shoot, SLR, disposable, whatever.

September 18-19: Groundswell Grownup Camp

  • Open to anyone over 18, this is a rustic overnight retreat within an hour of Cincinnati.

  • Rekindle your passion, immersed in nature! Reconnect with your body, your community and the earth through somatic practice, meditative hikes, yoga, art therapy, music therapy, and more. This retreat is especially applicable to those in the helping, healing or teaching professions.

  • See our Sliding Scale options here: priced from $250-350 which includes food and lodging.

How to Register and Prepare

These sessions don't require advance registration, with the exception of Xavier's Summer Arts Camp. Here are a few tips for maximizing your experience:

  • Prep for participation: Some workshops may ask you to bring specific items like old photos.

  • Create habits: Attend workshops on a regular basis to build trust and deepen learning.

  • Stay open to sharing, listening, and getting outside of your comfort zone in group settings.

  • Go further: Connect with facilitators after the events for additional support or referrals.

  • Remain curious: Reflect afterward, and try to apply new skills and insights in your daily life.
