The Power of Letting Go: Shadow Work

Release Rituals

As we learned from Carl Jung, one common way we keep ourselves stuck is by failing to acknowledge our Shadow Self. By refusing to admit that this part of us exists, we are holding onto the limiting definition that we are either “completely good” or “all bad.” This black-or-white thinking can actually keep us tethered to our darkest parts, possibly the very thing we were trying to avoid in the first place.  One powerful tool we can embrace in Shadow Work is the art of release.  When we work on releasing versions of ourselves that no longer serve us, it’s important to name these less desirable traits in a non-judgmental manner. Below you’ll find three simple affirmations that can help you let go with intention, making space for new growth and possibilities.

Affirmations for Releasing

Pick a time in the evening to reflect on your day. Select an affirmation (use the list below or author your own) and work with it for a week, or longer if one stands out as more pressing. There are many ways to approach these, which can include not only writing in a journal, but also free drawing, songwriting, abstract painting, or meditative walking.

  • “I am free from what no longer serves me.”

  • “I welcome new growth and possibilities with an open mind.”

  • “I release with love and gratitude, trusting the journey ahead.”

Once you’ve chosen an affirmation, close the gap between inspiration and action by putting this practice on your calendar and setting an alarm. Remember to make the practice short and easy, so that adding in a daily practice doesn’t become too daunting. After you’ve settled into a consistent routine, you can always add more depth to it. The more you bring awareness to these intentions, the more your mind will get used to connecting inner analysis with bodily movement.

Why Releasing is Essential in Shadow Work

Release is about honoring what was, then allowing ourselves to move forward. In Shadow Work, releasing can mean acknowledging patterns and stories from our past, then choosing to let them rest. By creating rituals around release, we reinforce our intention to live with freedom and authenticity.
