New Calming Space at Groundswell!

Same spot, new space: in honor of calm spaces, we moved within the same building, but to the room right next door.

A calm space is often a tidy one—hence the saying, “tidy space, tidy mind.” An environment free of clutter can help quiet the brain and promote peace. Calming colors also play a role; shades like deep blue can ease anxiety, while orange, symbolizing enthusiasm, may inspire creativity and confidence.

Adding low-maintenance plants to your space can create a calming atmosphere by offering a sense of purpose and serving as a healthy distraction from stressful thoughts. Research shows that tending to plants or a garden can have positive effects on your mental and physical health, too!

One of the most crucial elements of a calm space is the presence of supportive people. Being around those who value and encourage you can lift your mood and contribute to a calmer mind and overall well-being. This also includes people who respect your boundaries when you need to be alone.

Of course, a "calm space" looks different for everyone, and that's completely okay. Although we mentioned a tidy environment, other folks might feel more relaxed in a messier setting where they can get their hands dirty. What feels calming is personal and varies from person to person.

Try this directive…

  • Think about what a calm space looks like to you. Try imagining the visuals in your mind.

  • If it's difficult to conjure up a mental picture, take out some pens or markers and draw a diagram. What are the lighting and colors? Can you make a list of what would or wouldn't be in the space?

  • Who is in your calm space? Or is it just you? What if you allow someone in for a portion of time?

  • What does a calm space sound like to you? How does it smell? What textures can you feel there?

  • Lastly, what barriers prevent you from accessing calm spaces? How do you get in your own way?

We are looking forward to hearing about what you came up with, and can't wait to share our calm space with you. Schedule your next session to see it for yourself.
